The Department announced that its cost index was prepared for the first time on the basis of 1957-59 quantities and prices. This was done, a Department official said, “following |fie lead of the Bureau of Public Roads and some four other states.”
A price index previously released by the Bureau of Public Roads showed that the cost of highway construction nationally in the second quarter of 1962 was 97.0 per cent of the 1957-59 average, while Virginia’s for the same quarter was 98.0 per cent.
