inis river, though not as impressive as the Mississippi, still has the Impression of importance. Later, however, the Missouri River was seen again, but far away from our first view of it. Finally, after a long day, we reached Fort Riley. Here we were stationed in the regular army barracks for the night. Before supper the main activity was swimming. After a delicious supper, most of us went to the PX and to the movie theater. This snded the day’s activities.
July 31, 1963 - Today we got our earliest start at 4:45 i a.m. in order to get to our ! next destination. La Junta, j Colorado, before the other i buses. This was because the j Indian Reservation there can i only accommodate two buses i at a time. On our way this morning ' we passed through Abilene, i Kansas which was a famous cow town. This was originally one of the wildest towns ii> the West. At about $:O0 we stopped fof‘ breakfast.' Befftre mm drove on level plains which extended for miles and miles. On each side of the road were numerous oil derricks. The rest of Kansas was dry and lifeless. Upon entering into Colorado, we saw that it was barren and desolate. We stopped for lunch in a place where everything was dry an dead. The wind carried the brunt of the heat, which was about
