Suffice it to say, he won and set about to*consolidate his country and make it great. He selected his capitol with great acumen If he had placed it in Istanbul (Americans pronounce it as Iss-stanbul), he would have been open to attack by land and by sea. Other nations had occupation troops in the city It would have been a constant fight for survival. Ataturk therefore proclaimed his capitol and the seat of the government of the new Turkey in the .dusty little village of Angora, whose name promptly got changed to Ankara. Any attack on his forces would be telegraphed days ahead by the dust they would raise on the palins in any direction. There was not only a change in name-there was a change in tempo.
