Letter From Turkey

Maurice F. Biddle, Colonel, U.SLA.F., Staff Judge Advocate, and part time resident of Rappahannock, writes us of his observations in Turkey where he is presently stationed.

Editor, Rappahannock News Six weeks ago I left the F-T Valley, Rapp'ahannock County, with its rolling green hills and magnificent vistas, bound for Turkey, halfway ’round the world. The thought occurred, as I was high over the Atlantic, that perhaps a look at this little-known nation might be of interest to my fellow-citizens in the Blue Ridge area. Turkey is about as different from Virginia as day is from night. First and foremost, at least in the country surrounding the capitol city of Ankara, the land is brown and sere, rather than green and bountiful, much like our western United States. The valleys, where there’s water are green, but even that is a pale green. Water is a precious commodity in Turkey. In places, it’s sold by the bottle, 10 kurus (pronounced koo-roosh-slightly over one cent) each, and there’s not too much to be had. Steps have been and are being
