BROILERS
Broilers prices in Virginia should hold about s t e a d y through September. If prices move either way, however, they should tend to pick up a little. Both national and Virginia broiler supplies are expected to decrease considerably each week on through October. National supplies are declining this year at a faster rate than last year. A 5 per cent drop is expected during September, but total supplies will still be above the same period last year.
The September 7th threeweek supply average for Virginia is about one million broilers. By the end of September a 17 per cent decline from this amount is expected. For Virginia, during the 3rd week in September, total supply is expected to average about 11 per cent below the same time last year. During the 4th week, supply should be 16 per cent below last year. With national supplies above last year’s amount, however, we can't look for much price improvements. Prices last week were: Virginia 14 cents, DelMarVa 15 to 15 1/2, North Carolina and Georgia mostly 13 cents with contract sales at 14.
EGGS
A seasonal peak in Virginia egg prices may be expected soon. In 1962, Virginia eggs reached a peak of 47 1/2 cents during the first pan of September.. This was followed by a continuous price decline until the end of September when prices had dropped 7 cents below the peak. This has been a seasonal trend for the past few years with some variations.
