TB Cases Increase In Area Over 3 Year Period

An increase in new cases of tuberculosis in this area for the past three years is shown by Statistics just released from the Virginia State Department of Health to the Tuberculosis and Health Association of Northern Virginia. A total of 16 persons died during 1962 from tuberculosis as a primary cause and ten others had tuberculosis although it was not the main cause of death. A tabulation of the information shows that in 1960 a total of' 67 new cases were reported. In 1961, the number rose to 82 and in 1962 at least <00 persons had been reported to the Health Department as found to -have active tuberculosis. The total number of cases under supervision by the Departments the first of this year was 554 in the 8-county area. The State as a whole had 1275 newly reported cases of tuberculosis in * 962 and Health Department personnel were supervising a total of 8,484 people. There were 130 deaths with tuberculosis as the primary cause and 114 other deaths with TB noted in persons with primary cause of death non-tuberculous. “This' is evidence” said President Joe McDaniel,”that tuberculosis is not under control and it is endangering our lives and the future of our children. We must strive to conquer the disease by ; educating people to take care of their health and to help doctors and official agencies find the people who have the germs and are spreading them in addition to continuing with research to find a cure. Each
