Many homemakers feel that they must choose between carpeting and smooth surface floor coverings. But the trend today is a combination of the two. Area rugs make combinations easy and at the same time solve many decorating problems. An area rug in front of a sofa should be as long as the sofa. Used with a dining table and chairs, a rug sets off that part of the room as a dining area. The rug should be large enough to include the chairs when people are seated around the table. Area rugs are also useful in forming traffic lanes through a room. For instance, they help direct people around the furniture grouping.
