Snow Law

The only snow law affecting the Virginia sportsman and now on the books, is the one prohibiting quail hunting in the snow. There is no hard and fast rule as to the amount of snow needed to invoke this provision, so the only safe procedure is to consult a local game warden. Rabbits, squirrels and grouse can be hunted regardless of what the weatherman has been up to. Ruffed Grouse A gramI7 but often neglected, Old Dominion game bird is the ruffed grouse found throughout our mountain country. Often referred to as “mountain pheasant", the season is open on him through January 31 west of the Blue Ridge, but continues through February 15 east of the Blue Ridge. However with the closing of the western season there will be very little grouse hunting until next fall. The birds may be found on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge, but by and large the word grouse conjures up visions of rugged grouse range in Highland, Bath, Giles, Alleghany and other mountain ous counties.
