The city sportsman, often pressed for a place to hunt, has no such problem when he goes after grouse. With the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests encompassing a million and a half acres of Old Dominion mountains, the only “permission" he needs is a national forest stamp costing a buck, and open to him is more grouse hunting than he can manage in several lifetimes. A regular state license is needed of course. Arm yourself with a light scatter gun in 20 to 12 gauge and load it with 6 to 7 1/2 size shot. A good grouse dog is handy, but they are, hard to come by. Hunt the laurel and rhododendron thickets, the northern and western slopes, the hemlock clumps, and look for the bird’s favorite foodswild grapes, dogwood, sheep sorreljind winterareen.
