Chemical Corporation of Chicago, Illinois, has resulted in three deaths and over 30 injuries through flash explosions in states other than Virginia. VDA says a spark from any source, even at remote points, could detonate the highly explosive vapors formed by the product. So far this product has not been found in Virginia, The other product labeled “Qwite* is a laundry detergent which has appeared in Virginia and been seized by VDA. It is manufactured by the Calusa Chemical Company, Inc., of Los Angeles, California, primarily for distribution through laundrymat vending machines. The product is not labeled to show that it is highly caustic and may cause severe burns to the user if proper precautions are not taken. The material has an alkalinity equivalent to 37 per cent Sodium Hydroxide (household lye). The Virginia Hazardous Susstances Law was enacted by the 1964 General Assembly and became effective June 26.
