Frosted Grasses

Can Kill Animals

Animals can be killed by graz ing on sudan grass or Sudan sorghum crosses following a frost or freeze, warns W. H. Lyne county agent with the Virginia Agricultural Extension Service. Green chop made after a frost or freeze can be just as harmful, he adds. The safest thing to do, says Lyne is to make silage out of the frozen grass. This permits prussic acid (the poison) to escape in a gaseous form during ensiling and while the silage is being moved and fed.
