From Sheep Flocks

This is a good time of year to look over your sheep flocks and plan your program for the coming year, says W. H. Lyne county agelit with the Virginia Agricultural Extension Service,

Sheep should be culled on the basis of their production. This can be done best by tagging or marking each ewe and keep ing a record of her lamb and wool production. It can also be done by marking the poor or nonproducers j at lambing time and when lambs are weaned or sold. Ewes should also be culled because of old age, bad udders;, and poor health. With feed in short supply, poorly produce ing ewe6 will be more expensive to keep this year, says Lyne. Foot rot has been a serious problem in many sheep flocks for several years. It can be avoided, however, If proper precautions are taken when bringing new sheep on the farm. The trouble can also be cured in most sheep. No foot rot was detected in the county when flocks were in spected for scabies—keep the disease out of your flocks. Buy only sheep free of foot rot-. Fall is also a good time to reduce internal parasites and to eliminate external paras* tes. Internal parasites have caused less trouble during the past two years because of dry weather. This does not mean farmers should stop their routine worming program. On the contrary, says Lyne, by treating at the recommended Intervals, the par asite load will be reduced and sheep will be much better of! will require less feed this winter, give higher production and have fewer parasites the next wet season.
