Historical Society
To Be Organized
Representatives of the six districts of Rappahannock met at Avon Hall in Washington last Friday night to discuss the formation of an historical society. The twenty-five people present stressed the need of some type of organized program to do the research, recording, and preservation of Rappahannock, history. Since this is the proper work of historical societies over the country it was decided, under the circumstances, that such a society be started here. Under the temporary chairmanship of Judge Rayner Snead the group voted to hold a general meeting of organization on December 14 at the court house. December 14 is most appropriate for the founding of an historical society here in that it is the 168th anniversary of the establishment of the 'Town of Washington" by the State Legislature. The court house is also most appropriate in that it is the seat of county government, and the place where much history is made. Those interested in any of the many phases of county history, and feel that they can contribute in some way are invited to attend this meeting which will, be at 7:30 p.m. The society will be established along very practical lines with special emphasis on work to be done.
