They led us through the circuitous paths of the Big Woods, then out on to the open fields of the old Edgar Compton Farm and finally to ground below one of Miss ,Gerty Durant’s snake fences. ■Our host, Oliver, rode hard on his admirable grey'David, leading us the whole way and giving out occasional rebel yells that set the galloping Field atingle! In the Field as welcome guests were several visiting hunters besides the Rappahannock Hunt territory regulars: Mrs. Margaret Lockhart from Radnor, Mrs. An- | drew Jessiman, on vacation from the Warrenton Hunt, Mr. and Mrs. H. Magruder Keyser, Mr. and Mrs. V. Shackelford of Orange, Mr. Robert Burneston of the Casanova Hunt, Mra I Anthony Slewka, down from the i Pittsburgh area, Mr. Billy Dameron from Fredericksburg, Miss Joanne Jefferies of Culpeper, John Hill, Jr„ and eight young ladies strong from Mary Washington College, (among them “Corkie", one of last year's top junior equitation kiddies in Virginia) under the firm guiding hand of their riding instructor, Mr. Michael Kurchner. It must be commented that their hunting manners were exemplary.
After the Hunt was over, the “Ball* began...and we did Have one! The Field of 60 odd stormed the “Big House" to join the other breakfasters— some 150 in fact^-many of whom had been in Emily Durant’s Hill-topping brigade. Every room, every passageway, every staircase, all porches on the front, on the sides, 'on the back—all were streaming with animated people. Penn Station at rush hour doesn’t hold a candle to the traffic that flowed through the Durant’s house on that day.
