Luther Payne, left, of Washington, Va. smiles with pride over the 305-lb. black bear which he bagged Christmas Eve morning in the orchard of John Marshall Clark in Gid Brown Hollow. With him is his son and hunting companion, Franklin Payne of Rixeyville. Mr. Payne was half through skinning the animal before a photographer happened by, so the “bare bear" redressed for the photo (note white around hind feet.) 1
