A VA benefit check arriving on or after the last day of the period covered by the payment should be returned to the VA in event of the payee’s death. In fact, any government check which has not been cashed should be returned if the payee dies. A veteran’s monthly compensation or pension payment is stopped effective the last day of the month prior to the month in which he dies. If the widow is eligible for bene fits, she will be paid such benefits effective the first day of’ the month in which the veteran dies, and she will receive for the month of the veteran’s death an amount not less than what the veteran would have received. In case of a widow’s death, payments to her are also stopped the last day of the month prior to her death. Insurance checks received of unnegotiated after the payee has died should be returned. If they are cashed a refund will be required by the federal Government. Addit i o n a 1 amounts payable to any other person under the insurance contract will be authorized in accordance with the provisions of the policy and designation by insured.
