Forage tests provide livestockmen an accurate means of budgeting their feeds to their livestock in such a manner that nutrient requirements are met at least costs. While this is of appreciable economic advantage there is another benefit possible of even greater dollar value. Comparisons of test results for different years can tell a farmer whether his is harvest ing his silage at the best stage of maturity and thereby loWer his cost of TDN! How Tom Massie accomplish ed this has been reported pro viously in the news. Now we have a comparison of the Har rises corn silages*. 14.8% TDN last year and 31.0%this year! From the feed budgeting angle; it took 65 lbs. of last year’s silage at ‘Hidden Valley" to meet TDN requirements of a 1100 lb. dry beef cow as compared* to but 31 lbs. of the 1964 silage. This kind of improvement in management has quite an impact on reducing both fi* ed and variable costs.
