Trout Will Be
Ready for Anglers
Approximately a half million trout are expected to be released in designated trout streams by the time the season opens at noon, April 2, according to Game Commission Fish Division Chief R. G. Martin. The fish from state and federal hatcheries will be stocked in some 250 streams in 40 Virginia Counties. The fish will be predominant ly yearlings with a few two and one-half year olds and excess brood fish for variety and excitement. Over half of the available production will be stocked by opening day with the remainder scheduled for May and June in-season stocking.
Trout fishing regulations and creel limits will be the same as those in effect last year. Anglers are allowed 8 trout daily on streams but only 5 trout per day when fishing in impoundments. The Commission’s daily fee fishing facility on Clinch Mountain Wildlife Management Area also has a special creel limit of 5 fish dally. The 60 acre lake on the Com mission’s Hidden Valley Wildlife Management Area will be opened with the regular trout season at noon, April 2. The lake was stocked with rainbow finger lings in January of 1965. Only fish 10 inches or over may be creeled, and anglers are required to use artificial lures with bafbless hooks. Streams in this area to be stocked are Piney Branch, Rush River and Thornton River.
