Veterans having military ser vice since January 31, 1955. should be warned to avoid signing contracts or agreements to enroll in correspon dence or similar courses in anticipation of eligibility for educational benefits under the new G. I. Bill.
Veterans who enter into such agreements might become obligated under a contract to pay a school which has not been approved by the Veterans Administration or the State Ap proval Agency. Under these circumstances, the Veterans Administration could not pay the veteran his monthly allow ance for education and training.
Before signing any Contracts or agreements, veterans should first determine whether the school and the course have been approved. This information is available through any Veterans Administration Regional Office or any office of the Virginia Division of War Veterans Claims. Schools offering courses by correspondence must still be approved by the approving agency in each state. The report of approval, however, is furnished to the VA Central Office, which in turn furnishes a complete listing of such institutions to each Regional Office. Once a veterna has determined that the school and course are approved, he can then complete and submit his application form. This form can be obtained from any office of the Virginia Division of War Veterans Claims. When pursuing a course of education by correspondence, a veteran is only paid educational allowance at a rate which will reimburse him for the cost of the lessons he completes. Such payments may normally be expected from the VA at the end of each quarterly period, since the amount is not enough to justify the VA issuing a check each month. Edward M. Mathews, Veterans Claims Agent, of the Front Royal Office of DWVC is in Washington at the Clerk’s Office on 2nd. and 4th Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and will gladly give more details on this subject or any other matter connected with veteran's affairs.
