$6,000 Allocated for
Rappk. Farmers
The federal government has recently allocated $6,000 to help Rappahannock County farmers whose cover crops have been destroyed or damaged by the recent drought, W. W. Lewis, Extension agronomist at Virginia Tech, announced today. "Farmers whose lands havej suffered drought damage! should immediately look into the possibilities for help that this extra money provides," Lewis emphasized. Thirty-seven Virginia counties have been approved for a total of $453,000 of the special funds. Under this emergency conservation program, the federal government will share with the farmer half the cost of the lime, fertilizer and seed required to re-establish a cover crop of grasses and legumes on the drought-damaged land. "Although soil conservatior is the primary purpose, the vegetative cover may be pastured consistent with good farm management practice," Lewis said. “This can be especially important to those livestock producers in areas where there is a scarcity of forages and grains." Rappahannock County farmers seeking assistance under this program should contact their county Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service offices, Lewis said. Those approved for assistance must complete fertilizing and seeding and make reports to their ASCS offices not later than Dec. 31.
