18-Mi. Section of 1-81
An 18 1/2 - mile section of Interstate 81 North of Lexington will be opened to traffic next Wednesday, February 1, the St^te Highway Department said today. The new segment extends north from an interchange with US Route 11 north of Lexington, in Rockbridge County, to another connection with Route 11 near Greefiville, in Augusta County. With the opening, Virginia will have 550 miles of its 1,056 mile interstate system in use by traffic, with about 140 more miles under construction. Interstate 81 is the longest route in the system in Virginia, stretching 325 miles from the West Virginia border north of Winchester to the Ten nessee line near Bristol. After the opening next week, some 265 miles of 1-81 will be open to motorists. With 40 more miles under construction, only 20 miles are yet to be put under way. Construction, and right-ofway acquisition costs for the new section north of Lexington totaled approximately $14 mil lion.
