I Vote On Program
Virginia pork producers will; vote from March 16 to April l 1 to determine whether to j establish and finance a swine | self-help program. All producers who sold 25 or more! feeder pigs or slaughter hbgs : in 1966 are eligible to vote.The program proposes a five cents per head deduction on sale of slaughter hogs and two I cents per head deduction on feeder pigs sold. The money would go into a Pork Industry Fund, administered by a Pork Industry Commission appoint ed by the Governor. This commission would consist of 12 members, at least seven of whom must be pork producers. The commission would make the decisions regarding expenditure of the money for swine research and education and promotion of pork. The pressing production problems of pork producers in Virginia would receive primary attention. . ' : < Qualified producers should! obtain a certification form,; sign and return it to the Virginia Department of Agriculture in Richmond no later than March 1. The Department of Agriculture will prepare certified! voter lists and mail ballots by April 1 for his vote to count. If a simple majority approves the program, the deductions will be made by the first handler of the animals being sold—such as livestock auction markets and packer; buying stations.
