John Paul Jones was In command of an old, leaky ship, the Bonhomme Richard, when he met a convoy of 40 British • ships headed by the Serapls. The Bonhomme Richard, a 12-pounder, engaged the Sera pis, an 18-pounder. After a (fierce fight, the Bonhomme I Richard began to sink. The captain of the British ship 'signaled, *H^ve you struck?" To which John Paul Jones imade his immortal reply: *Tve just begun to fight!" Lashing his ship to the Sera pis, he forced the latter tc surrender after three hours of hand-to-hand fighting.
