counties and about on a par with last year over most of the piedmont and southside, areas. Grouse numbers apparently remain unchanged over muchj of the state, with a slight decline in southwestern coun-1 ties and perhaps a slight increase along the Blue Ridge. Rabbits, as usual, are spotty but generally more abundant than last year. Some of the. more notable increases are in southwest Virginia and the southern piedmont. Deer numbers appear to have increased substantially throughout piedmont Virginia Slight decreases are noted in the central mountains and in the Dismal Swamp area. Bear populations seem to be in relatively good shape with a sharp increase noted in the central mountain section.
