Every person eligible for Health Insurance (Medicare) under the Social Security Act has been provided with a Medicare card. This card, about the! same size as a regular Social Security account number card, has a distinctive red, white and blue design across thetdp. Anyone owning such a card should carry it with him at all times. The Medicare card shows the name of its owner, his Medicare Claim Number and the extent of his coverage under the program as well as when the coverage became effective.
Whenever a person covered by Medicare visits a doctor or a hospital he should present his Medicare card. In this way his doctor or the hospital will know exactly what cover-'1 age he has under Medicare. In the case of a hospital, the hospital needs to know the claim number to be able to submit a claim for Hospital expenses covered by Medicare. If the doctor wishes to accept payment of doctor bill expenses directly from Social Security he needs to know that the person is covered by Medicare.
