Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman recently told a conference of livestock and poultry industry leaders and representatives of general farm organizations that large grain supplies' this fall pose a threat of overexpansion in the production of livestock and poultry products nextyeac The Secretary pointed out that the prices hog producers get next year rest on the breed) ing decisions they are making right now, and he urged live-' stock and poultry producers to resist the temptation to expand production because grain prices are temporarily low -- a situation directly attributable to bumper grain crops here and around the world this year. The Secretary said that the Department of Agriculture will continue to do everything within its power to strengthen grain and livestock prices. He asked the farm leaders for recommendations for USDA actions and for a report on what they and their organizations can and will do, individually and in cooperation with USDA, to hold back excessive production and to improve prices of livestock and poultry products in 1968. “If farmers and their organizations will exert strong lead ership and cooperate with the USDA, we can build up farmers’ bargaining power and improve prices," he said.
