Finally, medical scientists | are much interested today in [ research into the body’s immunity system, now believed to be controlled at least in part by ihe thymus, a butterflyj shaped gland located in the J mid-chest area. Recently The | National Foundation-March of Dimes sponsored a njeeting devoted to this mysterious gland and to immunity mechanisms generally. It is also supporting research in this area.
One intriguing theory maintains that the thymus “dial” may in time be adjusted up or down. Turn down- the immunity system to permit a kidney transplant. Turn up the system to destroy a cancer. But ; this achievement is a bit farj ther off than the day after tomorrow. j Thus, while the foregoing ] has made liberal use of oversimplification, we can say that mankind is making progress toward more knowledge about killing and crippling birth defects. It may be the day after tomorrow sooner than we think.
