Gives Sight to Blind
Many times a year throughout the eastern portion of the state, a race against time takes place to bring sight to the blind. The race involves removing and transporting to the operating room human eye tissue used in corneal transplantations. R. Kenneth Hudgins, Director of the Old Dominion Eye Bank in Richmond, related recently the series of events surrounding one of these “runs". Sight-saving operations, of course, come about only when an individual pledges his eyes to be removed after death and forwarded to an eye bank. When- death occurs, next of kin notify the eye bank immediate ly. Within a 48-hour period, the eyes must be removed, delivered to the eye bank .where they are examined anc then transported to an ophthal mologist who performs the operation.
