The old adage, “no news Is good news" applies In many cases, however, the newspaper business is one exception. With the extremely cold weather aiding and abetting Icy conditions, people don’t move about much and people make the news. So Let’s talk about the weather. Snow last Tuesday closed the schools for a half day. More precipitation Saturday morning in the form of snow, turning into hall, sleet and rain In the evening and night. Sunday was really a slick one with fog and drizzle to accompany the ice. A light snow crept quietly in Sunday night making the already treacherous icy c o n d it ion s doubly hazardous. Schools were closed Monday and Tuesday and opened again yesterday. Temperatures ranging from freezing to zero preserved the various layers of snow and ice. Wednesday’s temperatures climbed into thefortiesfor the first time many days.
Task of Finding
Teachers Is Difficult
The task of finding teachers to staff classrooms was “more difficult” this year than last for 34 percent of Virginia’s localities, and superintendents in an additional 10 percent said that their teacher recruitment was "much more difficult". A Virginia Education Association research report al6o shows that 14 percent of the localities found it easier to get their needed supply of teachers*and 40 percent said they experienced about the same degree of difficulty as last year. O. A. Norton, Superintendent of Schools in Warren and Rappahannock said that one of tne greatesTdifficulties in acquiring teachers for Rappahannock County was the lack of housing available in the county. When there are no houses or apartments to rent, prospective teachers prefer to teach elsewhere rather than have to commute from a neighboring town. Concern was also expressed by some about the lack of adequate rhedical facilities here. Most needed were math teachers, cited by 66 localities, and science teachers, cited by 52. There was a shortage in the field of elementary education in 38 localities, industrial arts in 30, physical education in 30, and primary education in 28. Other areas cited by 15 or more localities were music,
