And it is not confined to small businesses. Some managers of large stores had rather see a shop-lifter escape than face the ordeal of having to go to court, day after day, with employes—witnesses—to try to see justice done. Thank goodness, most of these businessmen face the fact that, unless they try, the scourge of shoplifting—a billion-dollar loss which must be passed on to the legitimate customer—would become unbearable to both the merchant and the customer.
Still another example: Mr. and Mrs. Joe Average will shake their heads and ponder dver what is happening when they read that crowds will see a hideous crime being committed . . . and turn their backs and walk away. Yet, this same couple may witness a traffic accident in which they know the innocent driver will be falsely accused and sued . . . and they drive away quickly and silently, lest they face those long days in court . . . waiting for the case to be called . . . waiting through those conferences and recesses . . . hearing continuances pronounced . . . being told to come back again another day . . and WAITING.
The examples of the abuses suffered by seekers of justice could go on and on, with the conclusions the same: Good citizens are sick and tired of having their time “wasted”, needlessly in the'courts of Chicago, Sacramento . . . Danville ... and, just name the place.
Those joining this mushrooming army are citizens with legitimate complaints, witnesses who know and could tell the truth, and able jurors who seek every means to evade the dutv they would gladly render but for “wasted” time’in the courts.
Of course, every man is entitled to his day in court—yet every man should not have to sit idly in court day after day in the pursuit of justice. Must the wheels of justice grind so slowly that they seem to stop on the necks of the victims and those pursuing the truth as witnesses and jurors?
Unless some way is found to protect the “right’ ’of the victims and their witnesses and their peers, the delay in courtroom procedures will prevent justice on a wider scale than now.
We would not pretend to have THE answer, or ANY answer. Surely those able attorneys, bar associations, concerned judges, authorities, of legal institutions, and others are sufficiently alarmed to at least attempt to seek an answer. • Until and unless they do, law-abiding citizens will be increasingly less inclined to give their all in the name of justice while being victimized in the machinery of what is called justice. And what will happen to law and order?
