This photograph is of an oil painting of Mt. Pleasant, home of Mrs. Ada Hutf in Gid Brown Hollow, near Washington, done from memory by Lt. Col. Richard A. (irant when he was overseas in 1965. Mr. Grant spent many summers during his childhood at the Hu IT home. He sent the painting to Mrs. Huff with these notes attached: A painting of my old Blue Ridge home in Rappahannock County, Vn., painted from memory, the scene depicts the house built by Ada Marshall Huff’s father and is approximately 120 years old this year. My beloved Aunt Ada is the figure climbing the gentle rise toward the meathouse, probably to cut ofT some slices of hum for the evening meal. My old hunting buddy, Uncle Henry, is watering Beauty and Old George, while Claude chops wood for the supper fire. Lily Hughes is working around the old black kettle where she’s been boiling clothes—so it must be Monday. As for the other two characters, one is myself as a child, always around good old Uncle Henry, and the other, myself as a young man, carrying water from the spring house. I understand the beautiful elm tree is no more; that Claude has finally “retired” around Philadelphia; Lily i.s still around, God Bless her. As for Uncle Henry, he departed this old world, but while here he brought only happiness to all those he came in contact with, especially me and mine.
