Gold Cup Races
Set for Saturday
The only race sanctioned by the Natonal steeplechase and Hunt Association run with no purse-the Virginia Gold Cup-will be run May 4 here at Broadview Tarm, War renton. After three Maryland races -My Lady’s Manor, Grand National, and Maryland Hunt Cup-decided to give purses under a point system, the Gold Cup became the only sanctioned race in America run strictly for sport. The Gold Cup will present a new trophy this year to replace the one retired last year by Mr. and Mrs. David Ferguson, who won it three years in a row with Leeds Don.
The trophy is an antique silver guilt cup and cover made by Digby Scott and Benjamin Smith in 1796 during the reign of George III in England. The exact history of the cup cannot be traced through the years but its hallmarks indicate it was in the possession of an old titled English family for a long time.
Frederick Wachmeister of Warrenton, found the cup at Colllngwood of Conduit Street while traveling in London. He brought it back to be approved by the Gold Cup Committee. Besides this new trophy, the winner of the Gold Cup this year will also receive for one year the original Virginia Gold Cup, retired by Mrs. K. E.
