National membership of the DAR has grown to 188,093 in 2899 chapters, world wide. Mrs. William H. Sullivan, Jr., President General of the NSDAR told of her trip to Vietnam where she was the guest of General Westmoreland and Ambassador Bunker, and visited the troops in the field, awarding 47 Good Citizenship Medals to the men. An official greeting was given by Mayor Washington of the District and he praised the 4,000 attending members for their courage in coming to Washington . . in the wake of the riot publicity, and said their presence re-establishes faith not only in our Nation’s Capital, but in our Nation. . .” A message was read from President Johnson who said: “. . .are we, as a people and a nation, responsible and mature enough to respond to the challenges which face us with compassion instead of violence, with tolerance instead of vengeance, with understanding instead of hatred?" The National Defense speaker was Hon. John Rarick, Con gressman from Louisiana, whose speech was 'STAND UP - BE AN AMERICAN".
