Next Sunday, June 30th, marks the beginning of the 28th annual series of Sunset Vespers on the lawn of the Luray Singing Tower. Following a half-hour musical recital by carilloneur Charles T. Chapman the devotional service will begin promptly at 8:15 p.m. The speaker for this first service will be the Reverend John H Davidson, D. D., District Superintendent of the Petersburg District of the Methodist Church, Petersburg, Virginia. He is a Virginian, born in Fauquier County and reared in Luray. He is the son of a Methodist minister, and his was a native of Page County, the former Annie Hershberger
The Handbell Choir of Western Branch Baptist Church, Portsmouth, Virginia, under the direction of Slater C. Mounts will present special music for this opening service. It promises to be a most interesting musical presentation. Leader for the evening is The Rev. Richard Umberger, pastor of the Stony ManLutheran Parish, with The Rev. D. Paul Mishler, pastor of Oak Hill Mennonite Church, serving as assistant leader.
Dr. Davidson is a graduate of Randolph-Maeon Academy and Randolph Macon College, and was granted the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree bv his alma mater in 1950.
Pastoral assignments to Methodist Churches in Virginia include Buena Vista, Vinton, Richmond, Staunton, Danville, Alexandria, Lynchburg, Charlottesville and Norfolk He is presently residing in Petersburg where he continues most effective service for his church in that area.
Dr. Davidson is vice-president of the Board of Trustees of Randolph-Maeon Academy and is a Trustee of Randolph-Maeon College. He is a member of the Commission on Higher Education of the Virginia Methodist Conference, and is President of the Board of Trustees of the Virginia Annual Conference of the Methodist Church, Inc. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Petersburg.
He takes front rank among Virginia’s outstanding preachers. His presence as speaker at this opening service next Sunday on the lawn of the Luray Singing Tower is eagerly anticipated

Celebrates Fifth Birthday
Donna Ann Gore celebrated her fifth birthday on Sunday at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Donald Gore. Those enjoying games and refreshments were Earl and Betsey Jewell, Greg and Tony Wayland, Wanda Campbell, Sherri Brown, Kevin Harrison and Stevie Willis.
