Soc. Security Notes Many farmers who have domestic helpers in their homes do not realize that they should be reporting the employee’s cash wages for Social Security credit, Mrs. Hazel F. Crumpton, district manager of the Winchester social security office recently reported. “These wages must be reported if either of the following conditions is met: the farmer pays the employee at least $150 in cash wages during the year, or the employee works for the farmer for at least some part of 20 days during the year and is paid on a time basis”, she said. The current tax rate for both employer and employee Is 4.8 percent of the cash wages paid, or a total of 9.6 percent. The wage reports together with the social security taxes are to be reported to Internal Revenue Service by January 31st. Failure to make accurate and timely reports of wages paid to farm domestic workers can result in penalties and interest to the employer and loss of social security credit for the employee and her family. The Social Security office has a free booklet available to employers of farm domestic help that gives more detailed information on proper methods of reporting these wages. Write or Number 15.
