Last Sunday my pastor preached from the second chapter of James, stressing the fact that in some churches the wealthy were shown more respect than the poor. Some remark he made in his sermon sent my thoughts back to my childhood and to an old song my mother sang. The theme was of an old man who had attended a model church and of the consideration he had been shown. I recall only one verse.
“The usher did not sit me down
Away back by the door,
He knew that I was old and deaf,
He saw that I was poor.”
In my church we reserve most of the front pews for the old and deaf, we are a considerate congregation. It is remarkable how many of us have retained the faculty of hearing.
In James 3:8 we find these words, “No human can tame the tongue, it is always ready to pour out its deadly poison.” Also in chapter 4:14 we find this statement, “You are just a mist, which manifests for a little while and then disappears.” That is a little in the line of Omar RubaiyatFor
in and out, above, about, below, ‘Tis nothing but a magic shadow-show, Played in a box whose candle Is the sun, Round which we phantom figures come and go. Well, I will not accept that completely. I believe there is an ultimate reward for those who seek their God. I’ll leave the rest to Him.
