and a new sanctuary valued at approximately one-half million dollars. Several adjoining lots and one nearby house have been purchased to meet the expanding needs of the congregation. The total value of the church property has risen from $220,000 to nearly $800,000. The staff has grown to nine employees including the day school staff. There have been 1886 additions to the church with the resulting rise in church membership from 767 in 1956 to 1885 at present.
Dr. Kenney, a native of Tupelo, jMississippi, holds the B. A. degree from Mississippi College, Clinton, Mississippi and the Bachelor of Divinity and the Doctor of Theology degrees from Southern Baptist^^fheologiclL Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky/While in the Seminary he served as Fellow in Department of Missions and Comparative Religion. For several years he taught in the Extension School of the University of Richmond. Former pastorates in addition to the Smithfield Baptist Church, Smithfield, Virginia include Lyons Avenue Baptist Mission, Louisville, Kentucky and the First Baptist Church of New Haven, Kentucky.
During his two pastorates in Virginia Dr. Kenney has been active in denominational work. He is former moderator of the Peninsula Baptist Association, has served two terms on the General Baptist Board of Virginia, is a past-President of the Vtrgihia Baptist Pastors’ Conference, has served for several years on the Virginia Baptist Royal Ambassador Committee, is presently serving on the Virginia Baptist Family Life and Counselling Committee and the Virginia ' Baptist Pastor-Church Relations Committee, is a former President of the old United Christian Ministers’ Association of the Peninsula, and is presently
