Pesticide Program
Maurice B. Rowe, Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce, today announced the establishment of a department policy adopted by the State Board of Agriculture on Desticides and their uses in Virginia. He said that in the annual evaluation of the department’s pesticide program, and because of ;he public interest and concern in ;he use and control of pesticides, i statement of policy by the Board was considered desirable. The department will, the! Commissioner said, exercise all] reasonable caution to assurei protection of the environment' and the food supplies in its own use of pesticides and in the administration of laws regulating the sale and use of pesticides in Virginia. The policy says that VDAC will:
1. Continue to review all pesticide registrations, eliminating all uses not in conformity with the policies on pesticides of USDA and HEW.
2. Maintain adequate surveillance of foods and feeds produced and sold in the state to assure a wholesome food and feed supply.
3. Cooperate with other state agencies which are concerned with pesticides*.- in the environment and expand department facilities as necessary to further accommodate the analytical testing requirements of these agencies.
4. Use non-persistent pesticides in VDAC pest control programs when an effective, nonresidual method of control is available. When persistent pesticides are necessary to combat pests, use them under strict supervision, in minimal effective amounts, and at minimal effective frequencies.
5. Continue to cooperate with Virginia Polytechnic Institute, other state agencies, industry, and other organizations by encouraging pesticide users to exercise care in the selection, application, and storage of pesticides and in the disposal of
