William H. Durden was awarded a Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device for heroism in connection with military operations in the Republic of Vietnam. Sp4 Durden was serving a tour of duty there with 25th Infantry Division of the U. S. Army.
He distinguished himself by heroic action when his company on a sweep operation came upon several enemy bunkers and began to receive heavy enemy fire. Noticing an enemy rocket propelled grenade team to his front, Specialist Durden threw several grenades and brought effective M-16 rifle fire on the position destroying them.
