about three-fifths of the total land mass of the country. The plateau between Nairobi and the sea is semi-arid, and does support herds of big game. Mt. Kenya is a 17,040 foot snow-capped peak, fitting. practically. pntheequ^tor. Reports of explorers in the latter half of the nineteenth century, that there were snow-capped peaks on the equator, were met with derision in London scientific societies. Of course, today, with people trotting back and forth to the moon, and making wondrous discoveries everyday, there is not much we won’t believe.
Many of Kenya’s mountain ranges, west and north of Nairobi, are forest-covered. To the West of Nairobi, beyond the Rift, are the ‘White Highlands’. This is where mpst of the European and South African settlers established farms fertile land, with good rainfall.
Also to the west of Nairobi is the African Rift, running north and south. This is a geological fault, which dropped the land 2000 to 3000 feet below the surrounding countryside. The rift contains many volcanic peaks, now dormant and barren. There are chains of freshwater lakes, supporting fish and other aquatic life, including hippopotami, the bird population is varied and numerous, and there is rainfall enough for vegetation to support herds of big game.
