you are not governed by God, you will be ruled by tyrants.” - William Penn, 1681 •
When George Washington wanted the first flag made 1!e and some other patriots took a crude design to the upholstery shop of the Rosses in Philadelphia. There Betsy Ross was carrying on the business in the absence of her husband. Could Mrs. Ro6s make a flag, a red, white and blue one, with six pointed stars? Betsy Ross said she never had made a flag but she would try. But to her mind she said, five pointed stars would look so much better. The delegation agreed when she used her scissors cleverly to cut out one for them. From Betsy Ross’ first creation the United States flag has added many stars. It has flown over many lands and seas. It has led the legions of patriots to their final reward. And it waves for you and me today - a symbol - the red, the white and die blue - a beautiful canopy, which shelters the countless freemen who pledge its allegiance and give thanks to the same God Almighty for their independence.
