On Friday, August 28, 1970, at 8 p.m. at the Rappahannock Library Mr. Philip L. Thornton III will give a talk and show slides on the subject, “Contrasts in Ecology”, a timely topic. These will be based upon his experiences in Vietnam and in Ellsworth Land, Antarctica, the earth’s southern-most continent.
Mr. Thornton served with the 82nd Medical Detachment in Vietnam and accompanied a 13-man aviation detachment known as the Antarctic Support Detachment to the southern polar region. He holds the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal, 40 awards of the Air Medal with one award for heroism, the Army Commendation Medal for heroism, the Purple Heart, the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross, and - one of the rarest of U.S. service awards - the Antarctica Service Medal. He attended Rappahannock County High School, Washington, Va., the Staunton Military Academy, Staunton, Va., and Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Va.; and has served as park ranger for the U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service at Shenandoah National Park, Luray.
Mr. Thornton and his wife Linda are presently living in Sperryville. Mr. Thornton will reenter VPI in September.
