“Looks like a full load , I called to my wife, Eleanor, daughter, Elizabeth, and son-in-law, Don Williams, as they checked to see if all items were packed safely inside the station wagon. With suitcases, cooler chest, garment bags, freshly cut flowers, and the wheelchair safely tucked in, we departed F. T. Valley at 11 a.m. on the warm morning of July 12, 1970. In Arlington National Cemetery, we placed the flowers on our son Gerald’s grave.
By mid-a f ter noon, we proceeded along interstate 83 to a dinner theatre with picnic and swimming facilities. We had a large appetite by then, and enjoyed our fried chicken, fresh tomatoes, ice tea and cookies.
We had a quiet drive through pleasant countryside, and it is easy to find Hershey Park. Here you can see a typical Dutch farm and get a taste of mouth-watering Pennsylvania Dutch foods, among these, apple butter with cottage cheese, the Seven Sweets and Seven Sours, and the specialty of the Amish, a taste-tempting Chow Chow with a sweet-sour dressing.
We stopped overnight at a motel, nestled off to the left of the Interstate. It was a welcome sight after attempts to find a vacancy with adequate facilities for a wheelchair. The restaurant there was closing in 30 minutes, and,our waitress was well awace that she had only a half hour more of duty. We considered the lateness of the hour and ordered a light snack. In Elizabeth’s words, “Dad ordered a grilled ham and cheese sandwich”. “The sandwich arrived, minus the ham. When the waitress asked if everything was all right later, Dad’s reply was, “This is the first time I’ve ever eaten a melted ham sandwich”.
Our favorite pastime, at home or when away on a trip, after a full day, is a challenging game of Canasta. To start the trip off right, the men took the game of the night.
Monday morning we were greeted with a beautiful, sunny but cool day and again we drove through pleasant countryside. Most of the barns were newly painted and quite large. Each bam had a name and the date the bam was built. They are often near the house, and we are told the animals provide warmth to , the occupants of the household.
