interstate at Binghamton and sought a camera shop for supplies. Don stopped at the postoffice and asked the clerk for twenty 5-cent stamps. The clerk commented that he knew Don was from the south, because the New York natives would have asked for “fi - ive” cent stamps.
It was early afternoon when we arrived in the town of Hamilton, New York, the site of Colgate University. People were either sitting around on the porches or lounging on campus benches.
When we reached Whitesboro, we asked directions of a postman as to Walnut Drive, where our daughter-in-law, Donna, and our three grandchildren, Dawn, age 8, and David, age 10, and Dean, age 7, live. “You want to locate Baldwin Drive,” said the postman. “No”, replied Don, “Walnut Drive.” “Oh”, the postman exclaimed, “Walton Drive?” “No”, said Don, “W A L NUT Drive.” Said the postman, “What place in the South are you from?” The directions were to proceed two blocks on that street and take a left at the drugstore, go past a bunch of cemeteries, and after three blocks, turn right on Walnut. Donna’s house was not difficult to find and they were eagerly awaiting our arrival.
Tuesday morning was crisp and cool. The clouds hung low, and the sun crept through from time to time. Donna led us on a tour of the area. We noticed the Town of Whitestown, the Village of Whitesboro, the Town of Whitesboro, the Township of New York Mills, and the City of Utica, all adjoining each other. It was an excellent day for sightseeing and souvenir shopping.
