MOUNTAIN MEN: Shown above is the Woodberry Forest cross-country team that initiated 1970 practice with a 97 mile run. Starting Saturday morning from Rockfish Gap—dividing point between Augusta, Albemarle, and Nelson Counties-the eight man squad traversed the Appalachian Trail to Cheater Gap between Rappahannock and Warren Counties. Coaches David Bloor and Whitney Azoy led the safari which arrived at Chester Gap late Tuesday afternoon after camping in the evenings along the trail. Runners in the above pix are (1-r) Mac Ball, co-captain Ricky Bell, Len Treater, Grant Trevor, Coach David Bloor, John Thomas, manager Mike Hunter, co-captain Kip Brundage, and Austin Ball. In the photo at left co-captain Bell leads Coach Bloor through a forest glade. Ricky was the only team member to run the whole distance and he spent 23 hours in motion. Opening 1970 meet for the defending state champion Tigers is a home stand against Collegiate on Sept. 26. Coach Azoy took the pictures.
