Pristou explained that studies show the disease has moved from South to North according to prevailing winds. In Virginia, it is most prevalent in the Piedmont and Tidewater areas, and could occur in all parts of the state.

Silage and grain from com crops infected with Southern com leaf blight can be fed to livestock without endangering the animals.

Veterans Living

There are 420 veterans in Rappahannock County, and 540.000 in Virginia acconling to Veterans Administration figures released today based on America's 27.3 million former servicemen as of the beginning of 1970, according to the director of the Roanoke VA Regional Office. According to the latest available figures, some 60 Rappahannock County and 71,000 Virginia veterans were in service during the Vietnam era - that is, after Aug. 4, 1964. World War II veterans make up the largest group with 190 from Rappahannock County and 297.000 from Virginia. Korean Conflict veterans number 80 in Rappahannock County and 127.000 in Virginia. Some 50 Rappahannock County and 60.000 state veterans saw military service only between the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam era (Feb. 1,1955 - Aug. 4,1964).

Of 26,000 World War I veterans in Virginia, 50 are from Rappahannock. Nationally, there are about 5,000 Spanish American War Veterans living. Hie statistical breakdown points out that of the 540,000 living veterans in Virginia some 6,000 served in both the Vietnam and Korean Conflicts and about 35.000 served during both the Korean Conflict and World War II. Veterans with questions on benefits are urged to contact the VA Regional Office at Roanoke. Those who served since Feb. 1, 1955, may be eligible for GI Bill training. Those who served since June 27, 1950, may be eligible for home loans.
