has been completed, are being used for the bus experiment. The next extensions will be temporary roadways built specifically for the buses. The extent to which the preferential bus privileges will be continued on a long-range basis after the Shirley rebuilding is finished will depend on the extent to which use of buses reduces other traffic congestion.
Thus far, Fugate and Wilkinson noted, the experiment is considered modestly successful. When it began last September, 39 bus trips served an average of 1,875 passengers along the highway between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. daily.
At last report, 48 buses were serving approximately 2,600 riders in the same period, an increase of 37 per cent.
With the opening of the mile and a half extension, Inbound buses will have reserved use of the special lanes from Edsall Road to 20th Street between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m„ then will move back into the conventional traffic lanes until the rest of the busway has been completed next spring. In the afternoon, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., the buses will use the conventional traffic lanes outbound to 20th Street, and then will enter the busway for exclusive use south to Duke Street, where they will join other traffic permitted to use the center lanes southbound in the afternoon.
Mrs. Margaret Martin
Graveside funeral services were held at 11 o’clock Saturday at the Fairview Cemetery in Culpeper for Mrs. Margaret Ann Martin, 19, who died Thursday, September 3, 1970 at her home. The Rev. John Farrar conducted the service.
Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband Lyle Milton Martin, Sr. and son, Lyle, Jr. of Culpeper. She is also survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Woodard of Amissville; a sister, Mrs. McArthur Pullen of Amissville; three brothers, Richard, Sammie and Buck Woodard of Manassas; and her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Sam Woodard of Amissville.
