Contract Awarded

On “Mixing Bowl"

The State Highway Commission has awarded a contract amounting to $51,599,902 for the Interstate 95 multi-directional “mixing bowl” interchange adjacent to the Pentagon. The low bid was received from a group of Virginia contractors on July 22 and has received the concurrence of the Federal Highway Administration. Ihe dollar value of the contract is the largest in the history of the departments •>. lire contractors are Brothers Company, Division of Ashland Oil, Inc., of Richmond; Wiley N. Jackson Company of Roanoke; Talbott-Marks Company of Clarksville, and Moore Brothers Company and Moore Brothers Company, Inc., both of Verona.

Although the project along Interstate 95 (the Shirley Highway) is just over one mile in length, it will be one of the most complex and challenging highway construction jobs ever undertaken in the eastern United States.

It includes 17 bridges, some of them tri-level in design, and will have a basic plan of four lanes each for northbound and southbound traffic and two center lanes intended for eventual use in a reversible pattern for peak-hour traffic.

Complicating the construction is the fact that the contractors will be required to provide for continued movement of traffic through the work. And the Shirley Highway in that area with almost 100,000 vehicles a day, is Virginia’s busiest road.

The contract also includes a provision giving priority to extension of the experimental busway the remainder of the distance to Washington, with a requirement that this be completed and ready for commuter buses by next spring. At present, special bus lanes are provided from the Edsall Road area to Shirlington, and an additional mile and a half of busway will be opened about mid-September.

On the overall contract approved by the Highway Commission, work is scheduled tc get underway immediately and it expected to be completed by late 1973.
