Eye Donors Asked
To Display Sticker
Virginians who have pledged i ;heir eyes on death to Old Dominion Eye Bank are asked to display the small orange eye donor sticker on their drivers’ licenses, according to an I innouncement today by L. Paul Byrne, Chairman of the eye aank’s Board of Directors.
Byrne said that the sticker is designed to alert others to the donor’s wish to donate his eyes. Such a sticker placed on a driver’s license can be particularly helpful In fulfilling the donor’s wish in the event of death by automobile accident. Additional stickers, Byrne said, should be placed on the individual’s medical folder in the office of his family doctor and on his hospitalization insurance card.
Those who have pledged their eyes on death to Old Dominion Eye Bank have been asked to write directly to Old Dominion Eye Bank, Richmond Eye Hospital, Richmond, Va., if additional stickers are needed. Persons who sign pledge cards solicited by members of the state’s Lions Clubs may get extra stickers at the time they sign the pledge.
It is imperative, Byrne said, that the eye bank be notified by collect telephone call at the earliest possible moment after the death of a donor, because eye removal within six hours is required if the comeal tissue from the donor’s eye is to be used in a sight-restoring corneal transplant. Because the number of such operations has increased substantially, it is important that the eye bank receive all the eye tissue that can be made available.
