une measure tnai prompted considerable discussion was Senate Bill 23 which would increase the basic non-resident license fee from $15.75 to $40. A similar resolution was presented to the Commission from the Rockingham-Harrisonburg chapter of-the Izaak Walton League of America, calling for a $10 increase.
Behind these requests is an increase in the number of out-of-state deer hunters which comprise up to 23 percent of those hunting in western Virginia counties and bag 15 percent of the deer taken from that section.
The commissioners declined to support the bill at the $40 level but indicated that they would not oppose an increase of up to $10 in non-resident fees with at least part of this attached to the non-resident big game license. A license package to hunt big game in neighboring states averages about $35.00.
ANOTHER measure that would hit some sportsmen in the pocketbook was mentioned by Boating Committee Chairman Eddie Edgar of Norfolk. This bill, not yet introduced, will require the registration of all boats propelled by machinery, regardless of the size of motor or boat involved.
“Federal law requires that the states so modify their boating registration laws or face federal intervention,” Edgar said.
